A Lifelong Dedication to Ballet
A celebrated figure in the world of ballet, began his journey in Hong Kong, where he received his initial ballet training from Ms. Tania Tang. His talent and dedication were evident from a young age, leading him to win a gold medal at the Asia Pacific Competition Japan in 1989. This achievement paved the way for him to receive a scholarship to study at the prestigious Beijing Dance Academy in 1986.
Upon graduating in 1989, So Hon Wah joined the Hong Kong Ballet, where his exceptional skills and artistry quickly propelled him through the ranks. In 1991, he made history by becoming the first Hong Kong-born male dancer to be promoted to the esteemed position of principal dancer. This achievement marked a significant milestone in the Hong Kong ballet scene and solidified So's reputation as a leading talent.
During his illustrious 11-year tenure with the Hong Kong Ballet, So Hon Wah graced the stage in a wide array of major leading roles, captivating audiences with his powerful performances and technical prowess. His repertoire included iconic characters such as Pu Yi in the world premiere of "The Last Emperor," Prince Siegfried in "Swan Lake," The Prince in "The Nutcracker," Albrecht in "Giselle," James in "La Sylphide," The Prince in "Cinderella," Peter Pan in "Peter Pan," as well as featured roles in renowned pieces like Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, Balanchine's "Who Cares," and Kenneth MacMillan's "Pavane."
So Hon Wah's commitment to ballet extended beyond the stage. In 1995, he was awarded the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music & Dance Fund Scholarship and the Natasha Wilson Scholarship, enabling him to further his ballet education at The Royal Ballet School in London. There, he focused on teaching and obtained a Diploma of Teacher Course for Professional Dancer, one of the highest qualifications in professional ballet instruction.
Following his retirement from the stage in 2002, So Hon Wah dedicated himself to sharing his passion and expertise with the next generation of dancers. He founded L'École de Jeune Ballet, a professional ballet training school, and co-founded the Hong Kong Youth Ballet Academy with Virginia Wun in 2015. These institutions provide aspiring dancers with rigorous training and mentorship, nurturing their talent and preparing them for careers in professional ballet.
So Hon Wah's commitment to fostering young talent also led him to establish the Youth Ballet of Asia, a cross-culture performing company that offers performance opportunities to professional dancers from Hong Kong and across Asia. This platform allows emerging dancers to gain valuable experience and exposure by performing in professional productions alongside seasoned artists.
In 2011, So Hon Wah founded the Asian Grand Prix International Ballet Competition, a groundbreaking initiative that serves as a platform for talented young dancers in Asia to showcase their skills and compete at an international level. The competition holds regional events in major Asian cities annually, with selected candidates advancing to the finals held in Hong Kong, Bangkok, or Manila. This prestigious competition has played a crucial role in discovering and promoting exceptional ballet talent across the Asian continent.
So Hon Wah's unwavering dedication to the art of ballet has earned him numerous accolades and recognition. He was featured in the Hong Kong Dance Hall of Fame by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, a testament to his significant contributions to the dance community. He also serves as a board member at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music & Dance Fund committee, where he continues to support and advocate for the development of music and dance in Hong Kong.
So Hon Wah's journey from a young ballet student in Hong Kong to an internationally renowned dancer and educator exemplifies his lifelong passion and commitment to the art form. His legacy extends far beyond his own accomplishments on the stage, as he continues to inspire and shape the future of ballet in Asia and beyond.
